| Just a five-minute drive above pretty Elounda, is the tiny hamlet of Mavrikano filled with little whitewashed and stone houses, where the lovely little hideaway of Leonidas House can be found. Dating from the nineteenth century, and restored using wood and stone recovered from equally old but deserted homes in the area, the house is reached up a twisting cobbled alleyway covered in bougainvillaea. |
Accommodation: A huge old wooden door opens into the thick stone-walled, cool interior of the living-kitchen area of the house, with its stone-flagged floor and high ceiling with a wooden mezzanine level, and a small but well-equipped kitchen with an old sink hewn out of stone to one side. There is a table and a sofa here, and to one side a corridor leads off to the bathroom which has a half bath with shower, and a lovely old black and white tiled floor. Rough stone steps lead up from the lounge to the wooden mezzanine level which has a single bed and storage space in decorative wall alcoves, and through an open archway there is a lovely double bedroom with exposed stone walls, pretty antique brass light fittings and cool tiled floors. Double doors lead onto a terrace, with a fantastic view down to Elounda and the sea, and also a small kitchenette with fridge, stone sink and 2-ring hob, so you don’t have to venture downstairs for a cool drink or to make a quick snack. Lovely sea-side Elounda, with its beach and numerous restaurants and tavernas, is just 20 minutes’ walk downhill, making Leonidas House a perfect romantic retreat. |
