| When the Vamos Preservation Society showed us the houses they had restored in the village, we naturally wanted to pick the best for our guests and Leska Cottage was right at the top of our list. It is a house with a personality all of its own. Individualists who eschew the blandness of modern villas will cherish the wealth of traditional features which give the house such character. Situated in a quiet lane close to the taverna and the village grocers, it is only the addition of modern comforts such as a bathroom and a small open plan kitchenette that place Leska Cottage in this century instead of the last. The old wood-burning oven is still intact and its huge canopy covers a particularly cosy sitting area in the open plan living room. The double bed stands on a raised open gallery and below this (with limited headroom), there is another bed placed on top of the tank where grapes were once trod (it was a common space-saving feature in old Cretan houses to use the wine tank as a bed outside harvest time!). The beautiful wooden ceiling also dates back to the house’s original construction in the 1860s. The timeless charm that permeates the cottage can also be felt in the little courtyard which is shaded by a vine-covered trellis. What could be more relaxing than sitting here with a glass of chilled retsina and a good book, keeping a casual eye on the decidedly unhurried comings and goings of the village. |
