| A few kilometres inland from the coast at Kalives, the tiny hamlet of Maheri enjoys a spectacular setting on the side of a craggy hill, affording wonderful views over unspoilt countryside. And the locals appear determined that the place should remain unspoilt, for they recently declared the village a conservation area where the restoration of old dwellings is encouraged and any new development strictly prohibited. Converted using natural materials and environmentally friendly processes by their owner Costas into a holiday retreat of unique character and style, resulting in some of the most delightful accommodation we have come across on Crete. To the front of the houses there is nothing to interrupt the gorgeous country views and each of the apartments has its own terrace to make the most of this stupendous panorama. To the rear is a large courtyard - with ancient stone arches and interesting touches such as an outside shower converted from an old Turkish hamam - backed by stone-walled agricultural terraces which Costas has landscaped into a wonderful garden. An unexpected bonus is the stunning swimming pool on one of the upper terraces with breathtaking views. There are numerous peaceful corners - including a romantic little treehouse! Maheri offers a choice of one or two-bedroom houses, all with beautiful marble or wooden floors, terracotta and marble shower rooms, double glazed windows and many striking architectural features. In addition to the five properties in the main terrace, Costas has also restored two additional houses, one set 100 metres or so away on the edge of the village and the other set above the main cluster of houses, up some steepish steps, overlooking the valley and the pool below. These houses are perfect for those in search of even greater privacy, yet still offer use of the pool and facilities just a short stroll away. For those requiring an extra degree of privacy, a further house has been restored with its very own swimming pool. Built into the hillside on the very edge of Maheri, both floors of the house are at ‘ground level’. A covered terrace on each floor looks out over the generous pool, the pretty garden and the verdant valley below. The 60cm thick stone walls keep the house cool and its traditional features such as iron window grilles and only natural, local materials represent this environmentally friendly design. The old water storage tank below the houses has been converted into a wine cellar and there is also a tiny kafenion, with pavement seating perched on a shaded viewing terrace opposite the houses, where traditional Cretan snacks are occasionally available. Costas’ wife Rula prepares delicious home cooking using organic (and home-grown wherever possible too) produce. Otherwise, the nearest tavernas are just 1km away in the neighbouring village of Neo Chorio. |
