The Metochi Cottage is an old stone cottage, set away from the road, amidst beautiful, rolling countryside adorned with olive groves. This quaint cottage, built in 1923, appeals to anyone who prefers to holiday in a simple and rustic setting.

We were delighted when Michalis, the owner of the Phaistos and Knossos Villas (in nearby Kamilari) asked us if we were interested in his Grandmother’s cottage in this tiny hamlet and when we saw it we fell instantly in love. It offers comfortable accommodation with pretty features; such as tiny lace curtained windows and a traditional dressing table and a fireplace in the sitting room. The cool interiors owe a lot to the thick walls made from the local stone, whilst the delightful soft furnishings and embroidered tablecloths add a colourful homely glow to the dining area with its wooden ceilings and traditional carved wooden furniture. It’s a great place to rest and relax in the heat of the day.

Over the winter, Michalis, will be overseeing the addition of a pool in the garden, so that guests will be able to cool off in such a lovely location. We would recommend this property as a perfect romantic hideaway for couples who want a truly quiet life with peace, time and beauty to recharge their worn out batteries. The garden’s are a delightful spot to indulge in al fresco dining; some fresh fish, a bottle of chilled white wine and salad made from local produce - a meal can be made to last for hours. In amongst the colourful window boxes and rambling vines is the original wood burning oven, used to bake bread in years gone by.

The hamlet of Metochi has a low key feel to it, with just a sprinkling of houses. It is just 3 km from Kamilari which has a few shops and tavernas and life revolves around the central kafenion where the locals still gather for endless games of backgammon and cards, fuelled by tiny glasses of ouzo and plates of olives.

The nearest beach is Kalamaki a 10-minute drive away, a long stretch of fine sandy beach. Lively Matala is a 30-minute drive away, it’s worth a visit for its unusual recent history; it was famous in the sixties for hippies living in the caves lining the cliffs near the beach, and became for a time a Mecca for trendy Athenians. Now the caves are empty, and visitors enjoy the more conventional tourist atmosphere. The bright lights and bustling atmosphere are a million miles away from the quiet laid-back charm of Metochi.
