| Monastiraki means 'small monastery' in Greek and the qualities of this peaceful hamlet which attracted generations of anchorites and monks remain as true today as they have done in the past. Abandoned stone cottages lie amongst the groves of olive and citrus trees and there are ancient corn threshing circles hidden beneath their low-sprawling branches. Guests staying at this recently-built villa on the edge of the village needn’t feel that they are eking out a hermetic existence however, as the hire car which we have included in the cost of the holiday will enable them to discover not only the secluded bays of the northern coast, but also the shores of the southern Libyan Sea. Ierapetra, a 15-minute drive away on the southern coast, has been largely untouched by the tourist hordes, whilst Paxia Ammos with a small harbour, beach and sea-front tavernas is even closer. Discoverers of antiquities will relish the chance to visit the Minoan ruins of the palace of Gournia, a five-minute drive or pleasant walk away. Closer to home, the village has a taverna and we are certain it won’t take long for guests to feel the renowned Cretan spirit of 'philoxenia’. |
Accommodation: Built to spacious and meticulous principles, Monastiraki Villa sits in landscaped gardens. The vine-festooned terrace leads into the small entrance hall, with the two bedrooms also at the front of the villa. To the rear is the open plan living space separated from the kitchen by a breakfast bar. The delightful swimming pool is the finishing touch to this very enticing holiday relaxation spot. |
