| The beaches of the far east of Crete are splendid: long and usually semi-deserted stretches of sand or shingle leading into a sea of brilliantly clear blues and greens. So unspoilt are these beaches that there is rarely an opportunity to stay right by one of them. A wonderful exception can be found at Kouremenos Beach, a beautiful stretch under 4km from Palekastro. In the olive groves immediately behind Kouremenos Beach and the tamarisk trees which fringe it, two small sets of attractive apartments have been built. One of these is the Seagull, which comprises a dozen pretty whitewashed apartments and studios divided into two single-storey terraces and set in grounds just behind the beach, which is literally only steps away across the garden. The superb position and comfort of the apartments makes them perfect both for languid beach holidays and more adventurous exploration, since they are in the heart of a region rich in wild beauty, unspoilt villages and ancient sites. |
Accommodation: The interiors are modern and comfortable, with whitewashed walls, attractively tinted pine furniture and pretty fabrics for the curtains and bedspreads. Traditional shutters open on to the patios - each apartment has one, two or even three patios facing the sea or the olive groves. |
