| Mavrikano peers fondly down upon neighbouring Elounda much as a grandparent gazes at a young grandchild. The wisdom of past generations is much in evidence here as the stone-built homes of Mavrikano are able to cope with the occasional earth tremor and the thick stone walls regulate the air temperature in a way that air-conditioning can not. Life in this tiny hamlet sleepily revolves much as it has always done, around the twin poles of the church and the kafenion, so a stay at St Joanna places you at the heart of Mavrikano for it is located next to the small whitewashed church of the same name. We were delighted to discover that the same people who have so successfully restored Leonidas House are bringing this little house back to life. The stone walls of an abandoned village house which have withstood the rigours of time will be incorporated into a charming house of character with the help of local materials and expertise. Mavrikano boasts a mini-market and two kafenions as well as a couple of tavernas downhill on the approach to the village. Elounda is just a 15-20 minute walk downhill and has a broad range of eateries for all tastes |
Accommodation: The twin and double bedrooms will be arranged over the two floors and the upstairs bedroom will open out on to a terrace overlooking the small swimming pool and offering views of the Gulf of Mirabello between the white wall of the church and a stately cypress tree. |
