| As soon as you enter the high stone-wall enclosed courtyard with its stone-built barbecue, shaded eating area and dotted with flowering jasmine, bougainvillaea, and potted shrubs, you realise that you have arrived at a special property. This spacious house dates back at least 150 years and the owner Katerina has spent three years restoring it. Katerina has scoured the shops and the markets of Crete for tasteful antiques and elegant objets d’art to decorate the house to complement the traditional beamed ceilings and the exposed stone alcoves. The village of Dafnes lies in the heart of Crete’s wine-producing region just 15km above Heraklion and has a grocery and a couple of tavernas. The hire car we have included enables you to venture further afield to Heraklion, the Minoan ruins of Knossos and Phaestos and the southern coast of the island with its long sandy beaches. |
Accommodation: The living room is spacious enough even without the arched section at the end to provide a cosy sitting area around an open fire. One of the twin rooms is on this floor with the other two bedrooms located upstairs. Just as lovely as the entrance courtyard is the pool and terrace shaded by palm, olive and lemon trees behind the house. |
