| An almost intact fortress towers above the small warren of stone pathways, arches and courtyards, which make up the village of Maroulas, whose roots extend back at least 800 years. Arrow slits in the stone walls of the Venetian and Ottoman houses, some of which hold up present-day homes, attest to more turbulent times, but now the only conflicts are the heated but good-natured exchanges between the locals when they discuss the day’s events at the taverna on the square. The recently built Villa Maroulas and Villa Sevros sit just a five-minute walk away downhill from the village and at the end of an unmade track which winds upwards through olive groves for 1,500m. The careful drive up to the villas is well worth the effort for the sweeping coastal views alone, shared only with each other, the sheep and goats grazing beneath the olives and the birds of prey which soar overhead. Parents of young children staying here will welcome the grassed gardens, enclosed by a wrought-iron fence and shrubbery, whilst everyone will appreciate the air-conditioning in the upstairs double bedroom and living room downstairs. The two north-facing terraces are lovely spots to soak up the morning and evening sun and the double-glazed windows help ensure comfort in cooler early or late season evenings. The small resort off Plataneas and its sandy beaches, which have been accorded EU Blue Flag status, are a ten-minute drive away, whilst delightful Rethimnon with its water-side tavernas can be reached by car in just twenty-five minute. Alternatively take a drive to the monastery of Moni Arkadiou, whose pretty church and serene cloisters belie a tragic past, now long gone and replaced with tranquility. |
