| Like Leska Cottage, Arosmari was restored by the Vamos Preservation Society. Situated in a quiet lane at the bottom of the old village, these two semi-detached houses have been tastefully restored to provide comfortable accommodation without sacrificing any of their exceptional old-world charm. Built from local stone and cypress wood, each house comprises a living room with open fireplace and a simple open plan kitchenette on the ground floor. Steep wooden stairs lead up to a double bedroom on the first floor. Arosmari 1 has a shower room off the bedroom upstairs, whilst Arosmari 2 has one on the ground floor. Old black and white family photographs on the walls add to the homely feel of the houses and all the furniture was made by a local carpenter from cypress wood in the traditional style of the village. From the bedroom a ladder reaches up into the low eaves to an additional single bed for a third person, but we feel that the cottages will appeal especially to couples in search of a romantic hideaway. With a balcony to each cottage and a pretty front garden full of colourful flowers, there is plenty of space for just sitting around and enjoying the peaceful serenity of the village. The garden and the cottages are lovingly cared for by Marika, who lives just across the lane and is the type of person who could have inspired the expression ‘traditional Cretan hospitality’! Marika may not speak much English but her warm and friendly smile will bid you welcome more sincerely than a thousand words ever could. Next door to Marika’s own house, the preservation society have recently restored two further cottages, known as Arosmari 3 and 4. Both are just as charming as the original cottages, and whilst each has its own unique features as a result of the ancient fabric of the building, both offer very spacious accommodation for a couple, with a ground floor living room and open plan kitchen and an upper floor double bedroom and shower room reached by steep and slightly rickety stairs (in number 3) or a spiral staircase (in number 4). Each house also has a spacious first-floor terrace with enchanting views over the village and the lush countryside. The finishing touch to this rural idyll is the delightful shared pool and barbecue area, which the owners have added for this season, just 30m or so across the track and hidden from public view by olive trees. |
